The Wyoming State Hospital opened in 1889 and finished construction of all buildings in 1935. The patient population started at 30, and ended at around 100. With no official “close” date, the buildings have been abandoned. Plans were suggested in mid-2010’s that the buildings be demolished to make room for new buildings. This saw major pushback from the citizens of Evanston, where the old hospital is located, and politicians of Wyoming.
The old hospital was build to be self-sustainable; with farmland, housing, work areas, recreation areas, laundry facilities, a butcher house, etc. With the buildings still standing, the people of Wyoming want to preserve and honor this history, not demolish it. With Uinta Trade School, we can transform these buildings into a functioning trade school for our future workers.
